Rivers Cuomo “My Brain Is Working Overtime” Contest – Indaba Music

Rivers Cuomo “My Brain Is Working Overtime” Contest – Indaba Music

As the founding member and chief songwriter for the multi-platinum rock band, Weezer, Rivers Cuomo is rumored to have written more than 800 songs over the course of his two-decade career. In addition to his ongoing role as hit-maker with Weezer, Rivers recently released the two part album Alone: The Home Recordings in 2007 and 2008, a solo effort yet again demonstrating Cuomo’s boundless creativity.

Rivers is now offering the Indaba community the accapella and instrumental tracks for the song “My Brain Is Working Overtime” and wants to hear you complete, reimagine, and fully-realize the potential of this home recording.

We also had a chance to demo the new Session Console with Rivers (see video below), and he quickly became excited about the creative possibilities of this new online music creation software.

PBS Music Instinct on Indaba Music

31 03 2009

Sweet new program launching on Indaba Music today:

The Music Instinct: Science and Song, premiering Wednesday, June 24 at 9:00pm (check local listings), is a ground-breaking program that offers viewers a new understanding of the power of music. Music is found all over the natural world and in everyday life experiences. The documentary follows visionary researchers and accomplished musicians, such as Bobby McFerrin, Yo-Yo Ma, Jarvis Cocker, Evelyn Glennie, and Daniel Barenboim, to the crossroads of science and culture in search of answers to music’s deep and abiding mysteries.

This is a rare opportunity to interact with an exceptionally creative and well-produced program from a respected organization months before its launch. PBS, Thirteen, and the producers of The Music Instinct invite you to interact with this yet-to-be-released program and create your own dynamic musical language from sound effects found in different natural and urban environments around the world.

To help you explore this world of sound, PBS and Thirteen are providing you with 207 sounds from their own library, each recorded in pristine quality. To qualify for the contest, you must use a minimum of four of the sounds provided (although we encourage you to use more). While original recorded melodies or other material can be used in generating a composition for the contest, all compositions will be judged on the originality and expressiveness of the rhythmic and harmonic use of the sound clips provided.

Head over to Indaba and check it out!

Check out Indaba Music’s newest contest – a collaboration with The Derek Trucks Band!

Derek Trucks is widely considered the best guitarist of his generation, along with being a superbly talented songwriter, bandleader, and producer. Derek was playing paying gigs with The Allman Brothers Band and Buddy Guy at the amazingly young age of eleven and by fifteen had formed his own group, The Derek Trucks Band. The dTb is extending an invitation to musicians around the world to collaborate on the track “Get What You Deserve” from their new album Already Free. Derek and the band have made the four instrument parts available to the Indaba community.

Groundbreaking Album Production and Promotion Model

18 11 2008

Today, in conjunction with Nettwerk Music Group and Universal Music Canada, Indaba Music launches an incredibly innovative program for progressive hip-hop artist K-OS.

K-OS’s new album is not being released until the spring, but starting today, musicians around the world will have the chance to download, mix, and re-imagine the stems for all 11 songs on that not-yet-released album. This is an exciting opportunity in and of itself, but the best part is that K-OS is going to pick a winner from each contest to be awarded $1,000 and to be included on a companion album (also being released by Universal).

At Indaba, we’re completely psyched about this for 2 reasons. One, this is an amazing, unprecedented opportunity for undiscovered musicians to collaborate with a major artist and actually get serious exposure by winning a spot on a major release. Two, this program demonstrates the extraordinary flexibility and depth that new technologies are adding to the traditional album production and release process. In the past, people wouldn’t have a chance to interact with the artist or his content until it came out of the studio and was packaged for distribution (whether that’s in the form of a physical CD, digital download, etc.). Here, we’re demonstrating that an artist can engage fans even before an album is finished, building stronger connections with them, and hopefully creating a larger economic pie for everyone who has a stake in the album’s success.

We’re running a similar program with Third Eye Blind concurrently, so I think it’s on;y appropriate to wrap up this post by saying that Indaba is incredibly blessed to have found such progressive, forward-thinking artists that would enable us to demonstrate the utility of the technology and community we’ve built.

Here’s a link to the full press release about the K-OS program.

Amidst Chaos, the Music Business Goes On

16 09 2008

Enough has been said by folks far more knowledgeable than I about the trouble facing Wall Street the past few days, weeks and months. I don’t intend to add much to that discussion. Since I live and breath the music and tech world every day my attention has honestly been there and not on the bigger financial picture. That said, yesterday I took some time to connect the two. In the context of all the macroeconomic chaos going on, I find it both exciting and calming that companies in our space are taking the long view of things. Economic downturns, no matter how catastrophic, are cyclical, and when conditions recover companies will still be faced with the same strategic challenges that they are today.

Best Buy’s $121 million acquisition of Napster proves my point. Even if you don’t like this particular deal, you can’t avoid the conclusion that Best Buy sees itself as a player in the future of the music business. But more importantly, Best Buy isn’t allowing temporary economic setbacks (and potential drops in consumer spending) to hinder the fulfillment of that vision. Granted, Best Buy is getting $67 million in cash and short term investments held by Napster, so when all is said and done the deal is only costing them $54 million – not a hugely significant figure for this $41billion company. Even so, the commitment to a strategic vision over the long term is clear. So, as I thought about this acquisition yesterday, I realized that it was both exciting as an example of change in the music business, and calming as an example of smart people taking the long view.
